At early morn to Waterloo. The dark wood of Soignies looked beautiful as ever with its very tall straight-stemmed trees. Guides & relic vendors are numerous as ever. Some buttons dated 1830 are among the “veritable reliques” of the battle. I enjoyed the view of the field better than last year because I have read & conversed much about it since. A glorious fight it was, Va fit ardua. What must be the Duke’s feelings on revisiting as he occasionally does; enviable ones indeed. The rain prevented our ladies from walking over the field but they enjoyed an hour on the mound.
