THURS. JULY 27 A respectable town is this of Ghent. Its 200,000 inhts are now reduced to 85,000; considering the entire change of dominion that 300 years has effected, when the low countries were the most flourishing in Europe it is well that it does not resemble more the decayed state of its neighbour Bruges. But it is still the Belgic Manchester.

The exciting/existing remains of its architectural grandeur shew its former importance. Many fine old Spanish looking mansions attest this.

Our hotel, de la Porte, is truly an excellent one, and the secretary, most obliging & friendly.

A heavy diligence conveyed all of our party of 7 through a flat country to Termonde where the rail road
