CONT. JULY 26

inscription on the portico. The museum has some fine butterflies & jewelled beetles.

St Bavon’s cathedral is the pride of the people of Ghent, and not unjustly for its pictures are good & numerous. Van Eyck’s “Adoration of the Spotless Lamb” is here & its 300 figures, every one of which is minutely painted would occupy an hour to look at. Much fine carving is there & a nice cold subterranean church is there underneath. While Elizabeth & I occupied ourselves in shopping, they all walked off in the broiling sun to see a church 3 miles off & up hill, which fatigued them as they deserved for their insatiable curiousity.

In the Place d’Armes, we passed away an hour before night, listening to the music & observing the promenaders. Not one face, that was known to us, greeted our anxious eyes.
