commences; it will reach to Ghent in a few months. At Malines, we stayed for 2 hours and dined & had some nice sweet wine of Touraine & bought some Ginger bread & visited St Rumbault’s cathedral. This is the first church we have yet noticed the absence of dolls and tinsel finery; it is quite refreshing to see a fine building au naturel. Its bishop is a sensible man. Our party were more pleased with this than with any other they had visited. It was pleasant to me to meet an old acquaintance, as Mecklin seemed to be. I am now arrived on the same ground as my last year’s tour, & shall have frequent occasions to refer to it.
