at the rate of 8 miles an hour.

St Michael’s church & the Dominican church & some others we were persuaded to visit at the solicitation of Mrs Joy & the guide. I recollect only that there were altars & dressed up dolls in front of them & carved pulpits & confessionals & lots of old women, who seem to constitute the bulk of sinners and saints here & elsewhere.

The academy of pictures contains 2 curious ones illustrative of the history of the times when the Emperors of Spain were Counts & governors of Flanders. Much more interesting are these than the numberless other fancy subjects which occupy the walls, because being painted at the time of the [?schools] they represent the dresses, the customs, the buildings must [ ] be truly
